Bio Diversity in India
Bio-diversity is a God given gift to mankind. Bio-diversity includes the wide variety of living organisms such as plants, animals and micro organisms. They provide the most vital foundation for the human sustenance and economic development. India is one among the 12 countries, that are identified as mega centers for biological diversity. It has been estimated that India is the home of 45,000 different plant species. India is the mother land of about 7% world's flora and 6.5% of world's fauna. Loss of bio-diversity is a process by which ecosystems species and genes become extinct. Depletion of biodiversity has been greatly accelerated by large scale deforestation, over exploitation of plants, animals, fishes and other organisms by modern man. It is estimated that about 25% of earth's total biological diversity is at risk during next 20-30 years.
Biosphere reserves have been set up to preserve genetic biodiversity in representation of ecosystems. There are about 12 biosphere reserves in India. The National wild life action plan is a program implemented for conservation of wildlife. As citizens of India we can purchase goods and products which have less harmful environmental impact and are eco friendly. It is high time to protect our environment and prevent loss of biodiversity.
