Indian trains are known to offer moderate service, being the most uncomfortable and least punctual. The others, even in notoriously dirty Italy, are better if only on grounds of hygiene, and provide litter bins from my friend's personal experience. Sweden is exceptionally good. There the second class travel equals our Indian first class. Indian rail is bedeviled by want of finance, labour disputes, theft, vandalism and lack of strong central administration. Yet the Indians while complaining have an emotional attachment to the system, and take any change personally. Experts agree that railways should cater to the whole spectrum of travelers, not the mythical average passenger and that this is the best method of attracting passengers to Indian trains.
